The Niagara Whalers are your Russell Cup Champions, claiming the GMHLs annual playoff title for the 2016-2017 season last night in Port Colborne.

The win was sweet for the Whalers who completed a sweep of the entire playoffs, winning 14 of 14 games, at their home arena the Vale Centre in front of 620 fans proud to cheer on the first Championship junior hockey team in Port Colborne since 1943.

The Whalers set the new record for least amount of goals allowed in the playoffs by the Russell Cup winning team allowing only 13 goals in 14 games on route to the trophy. Starting goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk only let in 12 in 14 games on route to 14 wins, a GAA of 0.86 and an astronomical save percentage of .966%

While the Whalers were keeping the puck out of the net at a championship level they were also converting almost every opportunity they had with a clip of 8.35 Goals Per Game another record for highest per game average in a Russell Cup Championship run.

Leading the way in scoring were the Hore brothers Tyler (35 Points) and Matt (45 Points) alongside Captain Manny Manns who led the postseason in goals on route to 44 points and a victory for his club.

The Whalers accomplished this victory after winning the Presidents' trophy for regular season first place becoming the second straight team to do so after last year's Tottenham Steam.

The league and president both congratulate the Niagara Whalers, the City of Port Colborne and the Whalers fans on a very successful 2016-2017 season and wish you and every team the best of luck in 2017-2018.
