|Alumni Spotlight: Pair in SPHL|
The Southern Professional hockey League (SPHL) is a professional hockey league located in the southern United States. The SPHL is responsible for call ups to the ECHL and this year two GMHL alumni are playing big roles for their respective SPHL teams.Â
Nick D'Avolio with the Peoria  Riverman and Brandon Blair of the reigning SPHL Champion Pensacola Ice Flyers are two former 1991 born GMHL players who are having big impacts in the league.
Starting with the North Riverside, Illinois native D'Avolio who is fresh off the heels of a 4 year NCAA playing career at University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point that saw him as a major contributor to the NCAA Division 3 champion Pointers.
Prior to stints in the USHL and NAHL D'Avolio spent his rookie season in 2009 Â with the now defunct Oro Medonte 77's where he put together a 48 point (21G, 27A) season in 41 games.
This year for the Riverman D'Avolio is back at it again with his scoring touch scoring 3 Goals in his first 4 games a rate that has him 2nd on his team and tied for 7th in league, suffice to say the league will be on watch for the talent of the former GMHL Young Gun.
Brandon Blair on the other hand is having an impact in a different way, the onetime Bracebridge Phantom has been named an Assistant Captain for the reigning Presidents Cup winning Pensacola Ice Flyers.
Blair who came to the GMHL from Coral Springs, Florida played for the Phantoms in 2012 where he showed the natural leadership ability that Pensacola recognized this year, always willing to lead by example Blair went into the dirty areas willingly and played hard to the whistle.
Following Bracebridge, Blair spent a season and a half playing in the Federal Hockey League splitting time between the Danville Dashers and the Dayton Demonz before he got called up to the Ice Flyers franchise that has won the championship 3 of the past 4 years.
Playing professionally is an accomplishment on any level but for this pair of GMHL Alumni not only are they playing but they are making serious impacts. Whether it be through scoring or leadership the GMHL is proud of Nick D'Avolio and Brandon Blair and what they are accomplishing this season. Congratulations boys.
