The Greater Metro Jr. A Hockey League

Referee Committee

The Referee Committee represents the officiating body with all league business. Voting members of the committee, Supervisors, Instructors, and Crew Leaders focus duly and laterally as a team on increasing the quality of officiating services for the league. The committee has set forth a high standard of training & development unique for the GMHL and assures the league certification of officials under it’s sanctioned protocols.

Training & Development

Officials enjoy an exceptional program, which benefit all members of staff on every level from new recruits to our most senior leaders. We pride ourselves on our matchless “Grade Ratio” system. It is a core component of our program to measure performance.

1) Annual Training Clinics:
Clinics are offered for New Recruits, Returning Officials, Crew Leaders, Instructors, and Supervisors.

2) Dedicated Crews:
Dedicated Training Crews offer developing officials continued practical mentorship throughout the season on a game-to-game basis.

3) Supervisor’s Program: Ensures officials an exemplary opportunity for formal evaluation of their performance, which translates into a grade.

4) The Referee Committee:
Meets once per month, the members review Crew Leader Reports & Supervisor Evaluation Forms. The committee monitors grade ratios and sets training targets.

Instructors from left to right: Bob Klein, Shane Sinyard, Rich Wand, Al Zimmer, Martin O’Grady, and Kevin Thompson

Phase 2 of our Annual Clinic, for the 1st time, invited hockey club Owners, Coaches, and Assistance. The Ref Committee introduced a new Rule Book, the League’s Sanction, revised Policies, and partnered with Susan Forbes of lakehead University representing the Play-It-Cool program, and Kerry Goulet of Stop Concussions.

The focus of Phase 2 was to promote discipline, professionalism, and Athlete Safety. The GMHL matched the Referees annual donation of $1,000 in effort to raise awareness and educate staff on concussions, injury prevention, and management of an injury.
