Dallas, Texas- The GMHL would like to extend its congratulations to Kahlil Thomas, owner of the Oshawa Riverkings Franchise, and his son Akil Thomas on Akil being drafted #51 Overall in the 2nd Round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings!
Kahlil had a twelve-year career at the professional level, reaching the AHL, ECHL, and SPHL in his career. After a long career at the professional level, Kahlil decided to buy a Junior program, and in 2015 he brought the Oshawa Riverkings franchise to the GMHL where he has been the Franchise Owner/GM/Head Coach for the team ever since.
Kahlil’s son, Akil, has played the past two seasons in the OHL for the Niagara Ice Dogs, and has been on the NHL’s radar for quite some time now. Akil posted 21 Goals 27 Assists for 48 Points in 61 Games Played for the Ice Dogs in his rookie season in the OHL. Akil kept up his production the next year posting 22 Goals 59 Assists for 81 Points in 62 Regular Season Games Played, and 5 Goals 6 Assists for 11 Points in 10 Playoff Games Played. Akil has been heavily scouted this year by every NHL team, and had been named a top prospect in every NHL Entry Draft Ranking prior to the draft. On June 22nd, at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Akil was taken #51 Overall in the 2nd Round by the Los Angeles Kings.
