Pair of Spartans Sign in Sweden (Division 2)

Nynäshamn, Sweden- Bryan Austin and Britton Whitehead of the Russell Cup Champions, the Almaguin Spartans, have signed with Nynäshamn IF which is a professional team that plays out of Division 2 (HockeyTvåan) in Sweden!

Bryan Austin is a four-year veteran with the Almaguin Spartans, with a career that spans 165 Regular Season Games and 40 Playoff Games. Austin has been the franchise defenceman for the Spartans ever since he joined the team in 2014-2015, and has been the heart and soul of the team ever since earning the Captaincy in 2015-2016, and wearing the ‘C’ for the duration of his Spartans career. Austin is a smart, consistent two-way defenceman, who can shut down opposing teams, and add offense on the rush. Overall, Austin put up 35 Goals 187 Assists for 222 Points in Regular Season Games, and 12 Goals 35 Assists for 47 Points in 40 Playoff Games. Austin also earned the honours of 2015-2016 GMHL All-Star, 2017-2018 GMHL Best Defenceman (North), and winning the Russell Cup Championship in 2018 as Captain of the Spartans. Austin’s incredible career earned the attention of the professional level, and soon he signed with Nynäshamn IF in Division 2.

Britton Whitehead is a four-year veteran with the Almaguin Spartans, with a career that spans 142 Regular Season Games and 40 Playoff Games. Whitehead is a native to the Almaguin area, and has been the hometown hero for the Spartans these past four years. Whitehead joined the team in 2014-2015, and has created stability at the Centre position for the Spartans. Whitehead is a big body, with a height of 6’2” and 185 lbs, playing a gritty style of hockey. Whitehead is best known for his amazing skill at the faceoff dot, dominating opponents in the faceoff circle. Whitehead contributed to the Spartans by shutting down the opponent’s top lines, and adding some offense to the Spartans forward group as well. Overall, Whitehead put up 67 Goals 115 Assists for 182 Points in 142 Regular Season Games Played, and 13 Goals 28 Assists for 41 Points in 38 Playoff Games Played. Whitehead also received the honours of winning GMHL Top Defensive Forward (North), being called up once to the professional team North Shore Knights of the FHL, and winning the Russell Cup Championship in 2018 with the Spartans. Whitehead’s impressive career with the Spartans has earned him a contract with Nynäshamn IF in Division 2

Division 2 is a professional league of hockey in Sweden, and Nynäshamn IF is one of the top teams within that league. Division 2 is known as a step to help players get closer to higher levels of professional hockey. Division 2’s alumni list is long, and has seen players advance to Division 1 (HockeyEttan), Allsvenskan, and SHL in Sweden, top leagues in Europe such as the NLA, DEL, and VHL, and top leagues in North America such as ECHL, AHL, and even sometimes the NHL.
