Meaford, Ontario- On January 17, 2019, the Knights of Meaford took on the Bradford Bulls at home. However, it wasn’t just a regular game for the Knights; instead it was a night of giving back, and helping an incredible cause as well.

Hockey Hits Cancer is an annual tournament held in Meaford, ON. This tournament raises money to support Angel Hair for Kids, a division of A Child’s Voice Foundation. It is a memorial hockey tournament for the late Anne and Alexander Fleming of Meaford, who were the grandparents to the Fleming Children; Mackenzie, Emily and Hudson. Mackenzie, or Mack, Fleming is a Knights legend, playing three years for his local team from 2013-2016, and is the franchise leader in points (168) and goals (81). Needless to say this charity is an important part of the Meaford community as whole.

The Knights of Meaford and Hockey Hits Cancer decided to work together to raise awarenss, and the Knights hosted a Hockey Hits Cancer Night on January 17th. With the help of sponsors, such as Nisim and Here We Grow Fertilizing Co. the Knights were able to make some great jerseys for the Knights, which were then auctioned off after the game. The Knights held raffles as well, and between the auction and the raffles, they were able to help raise a little over $3400, all of which was donated to Angel Hair for Kids – A Program of A Child’s Voice Foundation.

Mack Fleming said in a statement about the Hockey Hits Cancer Night, “Thursday [January 17] was a successful night! We were able to raise just over $3400, and we would like to thank everyone who attended and bid on jerseys and bought raffle tickets. We would also like to thank the Nisim and Here We Grow Fertilizing Co. for sponsoring the jerseys to help raise money for the Angel Hair for Kids – A Program of A Child’s Voice Foundation. We would also like to thank Todd Campbell for being our amazing auctioneer for the jersey auctionto help us bring in as much as possible for the donation. Finally, we would like to thank the Knights of Meaford and Sabine Chollet for hosting us on such a big game in their season. Unfortunately the Knights lost the battle 4-2, however they helped so many kids [fighting] in their own battles because of this special night.”

The Knights of Meaford may not have gotten the results they wanted on the ice, losing 4-2 to the Bradford Bulls. However, they certainly got the results they wanted off the ice, and they helped so many kids because of this special night.

The GMHL is proud to see this type of community outreach by the Knights of Meaford, and we hope this trend continues throughout the league.
