JANUARY 7, 2011
HAPPY NEW YEAR! On behalf of everyone involved with the Toronto Canada Moose Junior 'A' Hockey Club, I would like to wish all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2011! ------------------------------------------------- Moose still climbing, but will try to bounce back from 2 straight losses over the holidays! / Three Moose named to GMHL All-Star Game! / Afternoon games the order of the day to accommodate schedule!
The Moose have been on a great roll in the last couple of months, and with 3 games over the holiday break, had the opportunity to reach up and grab a share of 5th place, quite an achievement considering the 5 straight losses to start the season.
After a convincing 4-1 win in Vaughan on Boxing Day with only 11 skaters, the Moose failed to take advantage of the lowly 77's in front of our biggest crowd of the year, losing 7-6, and followed that up with an horrendous 2nd period in Jamestown en route to an 8-5 loss to the Jets.
The Moose currently sit at 13 & 12, and with games still in hand on several clubs, are still within reach of 3rd and 4th place in the league. However, with or without these recent setbacks, the Moose will have our work cut out for us, particularly with all teams fine tuning rosters and improving all the time.
The good news is the Moose have beaten some of the top clubs, including Bobcaygeon, Shelburne, and Jamestown, and have more games against Bradford, South Muskoka and Elliot Lake coming up.
--------------------- Aiello, Simone, and Cormack selected to All-Star Game - special mention for Savioz!
Three Moose have been named to the GMHL All-Star Game taking place on Saturday, January 15th at the Teen Ranch Ice Corral in Caledon, ON.
Gianmarco Aiello, will set a record by playing in all 5 GMHL All-Star games, while AJ Simone, grandson of the legendary NHLer Tim Horton and Goaltender Patrick Cormack, who currently leads the league in Save Percentage and is second in GAA, round out the Moose representatives. Moose leading scorer, Swiss Forward Thomas Savioz, was an honourable mention and is a first alternate. Unfortunately for Thomas, in a league like the GMHL that consists of so many international players, it's difficult to fit everyone on the roster, and preference typically goes to the teams higher in the standings.
This year's game will feature a North America vs. The World format, following on the success of last year's Canada vs The World, but taking into account the New York based Jamestown Jets to put Canadians and Americans together. See the GMHL website for further details and ticket information.
----------------------- Weekday Matinees to complete home schedule!
As is the case most years for the Moose, we're forced to play a game or two on weekday afternoons to accommodate our schedule, due to the fact home ice is only available Saturday nights in a very busy facility. This season however, things are even tighter, considering the number of holidays that landed on Saturdays this season, in addition to the All-Star game, and even a fire at the TCC which closed the building for a week. While we typically try to use Board of Education PA days to limit the amount of time our student athletes will have to miss school, there are sometimes not enough of those days to play all of these 'matinee' games.
For this reason, please note the following dates:
Elliot Lake @ Toronto Originally scheduled for Jan. 15 will now be played on Monday, Jan. 17, 2:30pm
Bradford @ Toronto Originally scheduled for Dec. 11 will now be played on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2:30pm
Vaughan @ Toronto 1. From original schedule - will be played on Monday, January 31, 2:30pm (PA Day) 2. Was not yet scheduled - will now be played on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2:30pm
