Defending GMHL Champion South Muskoka Shield were on the verge of giving up the virtually insurmountable 3-0 series lead to the Deseronto Storm, but managed to battle back to take game 3 and get themselves right back in the series.
Deseronto opened the series at home with games Friday and Saturday, and came away with two big wins to take a stronghold on the Best of Seven Final. The Storm won by scores of 4-2 and 5-2, and game 3 on Sunday afternoon back in Bracebridge became a must-win for the Shield. Game 3 saw the Shield come out hard and fast in the first, but despite outshooting the Storm by a whopping 24 shots to 9, the period ended in a scoreless draw.
Deseronto took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period, only to see the Shield tie it up each time. Entering a tense 3rd period, the Shield scored twice in 18 seconds early in the third, and held on for a 4-3 victory to get right back in the series.
Rob Childs led the way for Muskoka, scoring 3 times including the eventual winner! Brad Clark lead the Storm with 3 assists.
Games 4 and 5 will take place this Friday and Saturday night in Bracebridge, with Game 6 back in Deseronto on Tuesday night, if necessary. If the Shield hope to repeat as champions, they'll need to win at least one of the next two and make certain Game 6 will be necessary after all.
