Game of the Round: Knights Complete Sweep of Lynx in Thrilling Overtime Victory
The Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMHL) playoffs have arrived, and with them, a new series of Game of the Round features highlighting the most intense matchups of each round. The first-round spotlight falls on a thrilling battle between the #4 seed West Nipissing Lynx and the #5 seed Knights of Meaford. After taking Game 1, the Knights finished the job on home ice, securing a 5-4 overtime victory to complete the sweep and punch their ticket to the North Division semifinals against the top-seeded Bradford Rattlers.
Game Summary
First Period
Both teams came out firing, matching each other with 17 shots on goal. West Nipissing struck first when Jackson Campbell opened the scoring at 15:52, finishing off a setup from Mathias Drolet. However, just under a minute later, Meaford answered on the power play, as Justin Blackburn converted a feed from Etienne Gilbert and Matus Jonas to tie the game 1-1. The physicality ramped up, leading to multiple penalties on both sides, but neither team could break the deadlock before the period ended.
Second Period
Meaford took its first lead of the night at 4:57 when Jonathan Wik capitalized on a pass from Ethan Doell and Matus Jonas. West Nipissing responded at 18:02 when Sergey Tishchenko found the back of the net, again with an assist from Drolet, tying the game 2-2. However, a late penalty proved costly for the Lynx, as Jakub Kalina scored a power-play goal at 19:51, assisted by Jonas and Maximilian Enge-Kristiansen, giving the Knights a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.
Third Period
The Lynx refused to go down quietly. Tyler Thibodeau evened the score at 3-3 just over five minutes in, finishing a setup from Vladyslav Teroshyn. But once again, Meaford answered on the power play. Kalina buried his second of the night at 8:18, with assists from Jaden Bull and Jonas, putting the Knights ahead 4-3. The back-and-forth battle continued, and Zachary Major knotted the game at 10:16 on a power-play tally, setting the stage for an overtime showdown.
Overtime
With their season on the line, West Nipissing pressed hard, outshooting Meaford 5-0 in the extra frame, but Knights goaltender Karim Agzamov stood tall. The game ultimately went to a shootout, where Enge-Kristiansen delivered the decisive strike, sending Meaford to the next round with a dramatic 5-4 victory.
Goaltending Battle
Karim Agzamov was a difference-maker for Meaford, stopping 40 of 44 shots and posting a .909 save percentage. His ability to hold strong in overtime despite relentless pressure was crucial in securing the series win. Carson Lockhart also played well for the Lynx, making 33 saves on 37 shots but couldn’t come up with the final stop in the shootout.
