Robert’s Hat Trick Powers Pirates in Playoff Opener

 February 23rd, 2026 at 5:17AM  February 23rd, 2026 10:24AM

The 2026 GMHL Playoffs officially opened Monday afternoon in Tottenham, and the very first game of the postseason delivered immediate intensity. The #4 seed Ville-Marie Pirates edged the #5 seed Tottenham Railers 5–4 in Game 1 of their best-of-three series — a matchup that Ville-Marie would ultimately sweep 2–0.

In a game that swung in momentum several times, it was a first-period explosion and a standout individual performance that set the tone for the Pirates’ postseason run.

Game Summary

First Period

Ville-Marie wasted no time making a statement.

Jacob Robert opened the scoring before striking again just over two minutes later, capitalizing on early offensive-zone pressure. The Pirates continued to push, and Robert completed a remarkable natural hat trick — including a shorthanded goal — to give Ville-Marie a commanding 3–0 lead before the midway point of the opening frame.

Tottenham struggled to generate consistent pressure early, while the Pirates’ forecheck forced turnovers and tilted the ice.

Second Period

The Railers responded with urgency.

Tristan Lavoie sparked the comeback effort with a pair of goals, both assisted by Paul Gavrish, cutting the deficit to 3–2 and reigniting the building. The period featured a parade to the penalty box on both sides, adding physicality and edge to an already intense playoff atmosphere.

Despite Tottenham’s push, Ville-Marie maintained its narrow lead heading into the third.

Third Period

The Pirates reestablished control early in the final frame. Mathis Bernard extended the lead just seconds in, and Cooper Brazeau added another shortly after to make it 5–2.

Tottenham refused to fold.

Artsiom Bialiayev found the net midway through the period, and Daniil Tokarev scored late to pull the Railers within one. With the goalie pulled and the clock winding down, Tottenham pressed for the equalizer, but Ville-Marie held firm to secure the 5–4 victory.

Goaltending Battle

Benjamin Nadeau was steady in net for Ville-Marie, stopping 35 of 39 shots in a high-pressure road environment. His calm presence in the final minutes proved crucial as Tottenham surged.

At the other end, Anton Nikulin faced 50 shots and made 45 saves. While the early damage proved decisive, Nikulin settled in and gave the Railers a chance to mount their comeback.
