The #3 seeded West Nipissing Lynx pulled off one of the biggest results of the GMHL playoffs, knocking out the reigning three time Russell Cup Champion #2 Bradford Rattlers by a 3 games to 2 margin in a best of five.
After the Rattlers took a 2-1 series lead, the Lynx had to do something that simply had not happened all season.
They had to hand Bradford two straight losses.
West Nipissing did exactly that, winning an overtime thriller in Game 4 before closing the door in Game 5 to complete the upset and punch their ticket to the North Division Final against the Wasaga River Dragons. A full preview of that matchup is to come.
This series had everything. Special teams swings, momentum changes, star power at the top of both lineups, and a Game 5 performance that will be remembered in Sturgeon Falls for a long time.
Game 1 – Rattlers 6, Lynx 3
Bradford came out looking every bit like a team chasing history and started the series with a statement win at home.
Gabriel Mamedov was the difference maker, recording a monster night with three goals and an assist. The Rattlers also got the goaltending they expected from Patrik Cullin, who turned aside 35 shots.
West Nipissing showed early pushback with goals from Tyler Thibodeau, Billy Sancibrian, and a power play marker by Saveliy Kornev, but Bradford’s short handed strikes buried the Lynx. Karlsson added a short handed goal of his own late as the Rattlers pulled away.
Bradford had the lead. Bradford had the depth. And Bradford had momentum.
Game 2 – Lynx 5, Rattlers 3
The series changed in Sturgeon Falls.
Down a goal after one, the Lynx exploded in the second period and flipped the game with special teams execution and timely offense. Saveliy Kornev scored twice on the power play, Riley Brunet struck quickly, and Thibodeau added another as the Lynx built a lead Bradford could not erase.
Mathias Drolet led the way with a goal and two assists, while Vladislav Morozyuk steadied things in net with 30 saves.
Just like that, the series was even.
Game 3 – Rattlers 7, Lynx 4
Game 3 was the heavyweight response and it was fueled by one of the players who has defined Bradford hockey this season.
Adam Dobrecky scored four goals, powering the Rattlers to a 7-4 win in Bradford. Captain Isac Karlsson, delivered four assists in his most influential performance of the postseason. Cullin survived a heavy shot load and made 37 saves.
West Nipissing made a push early and again in the third, but Bradford’s offense kept answering.
At that moment, the Rattlers were up 2-1 in the series, and the path to a fourth straight Russell Cup looked wide open.
Game 4 – Lynx 6, Rattlers 5 (OT)
This was the turning point.
West Nipissing came out desperate and built a 3-0 first period lead, with Kornev opening the scoring, Brunet scoring twice including a short handed goal, and the Lynx forcing Bradford to chase.
Bradford stormed back behind goals from Mamedov, Dobrecky, and a two goal night from Tighe Frazee, but the Lynx would not break. Jeffrey Findlater tied it in the third, and then Zachary Major ended it in overtime with the series equalizing goal.
After being up 2-1, Bradford was now facing something they never faced all year.
The possibility of losing two straight.
Game 5 – Lynx 5, Rattlers 3
The Lynx finished the job on the road.
Bradford struck first with goals from Jannis Seitz and Dominykas Boravski, and even carried a 2-1 lead late into the first period. The game had energy, and it felt like the champions were ready to regain control.
Then West Nipissing took over.
Saveliy Kornev scored three goals, including two massive strikes in the third period, while Jeffrey Findlater scored twice. Morozyuk made 35 saves and held firm through Bradford’s late pressure.
In the biggest game of the season, West Nipissing delivered their most complete effort.
They handed Bradford a second straight loss, and in doing so, interupted the Rattlers’ reign.
Goaltending Battle
Patrik Cullin was steady and gave Bradford chances in every game, but he was forced to weather heavy swings in momentum and special teams chaos throughout the series.
On the other side, Vladislav Morozyuk was the definition of timely. Even in games where the Rattlers generated offense, he consistently made the save that prevented the knockout blow, none bigger than his composure in Games 4 and 5.

Series MVP – Saveliy Kornev

Kornev delivered power play goals, momentum changing finishes, and then saved his best for the moment West Nipissing needed it most with a hat trick in Game 5. When the upset required a closer, he was it.
Implications
For West Nipissing, this is a franchise defining win. They eliminated a dynasty and proved their Round 1 victory over Meaford was not just a hot streak. The Lynx have now taken down two playoff opponents and shown they are capable of beating anyone left in the bracket.
For Bradford, the quest for a fourth straight Russell Cup ends earlier than anyone expected. The Rattlers still showed why they are the benchmark, but they ran into a Lynx group that refused to follow the script.
