GMHL Players of the Month: November 2023

The Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League has announced the second 'Players of the Month' of the year for November of this 2023-2024 hockey season on the eve of our annual GMHL Showcase.

 

The 'Players of the Month' honors is a distinction awarded to the player who is adjudged the best at his position & rookie (2006 born and younger and first year of junior hockey) through each month of the season.

Forward – Blake Anderson, Bradford Rattlers

 

Rattlers Assistant Captain Blake Anderson has quickly asserted himself as one of the top scorers in the entire league this season, particularly with a November to remember. In the month alone he played 9 games scoring 14 Goals and adding 12 assists for a total of 26 points (almost 3 points per game) in the Rattlers fantastic 8-0-1 month of November. In total the 2002 born forward from Peavine, Alberta has 51 points on the year (tied with linemate Blake Anderson for the Rattlers lead and 4th in the league overall) on 24 goals (Tied for 2nd in the league) and 27 assists (tied for 11th in the league with linemate and captain Arvid Malm). Prior to Joining the Rattlers Anderson, the Peace River AA product, spent parts of 4 seasons playing Junior Hockey mainly spent between the KIJHL and the High Prairie Red Wings of the former GMHL west.

 

Defenceman – Zach Burns, Durham Roadrunners

 

Durham has once again established itself as a top of the pack team in the South Division this year and a huge part of their success this year has been the emergence of second year defenseman Zach Burns, Burns rattled off a more than point per game output in November with 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 assists in the month. This year in total Burns has already surpassed his 2022-2023 point total (12) by more than double posting up 12 Goals and 19 assists for 31 points in only 22 games. The 2002 born former Whitby AAA player is the leading scorer amongst defenseman in the South Division (3rd overall amongst D men) and the 8th leading scorer overall in the South (28th overall league wide).

 

Goaltender – John Delaney, Bradford Bulls

John Delaney was a workhorse for the surging Bulls in the month of November appearing in 8 games total for Bradford compiling a record of 4-4 in those games. The games he won were of significance for the Bulls as he backstopped them to wins over the (at the time) North Division leading Pirates and the South Division leading Renegades. On the year the 2003 born Delaney is 12-6-0 with his 12 wins having him in sole posesseion of 2nd in the entire league. Delaney also carries a statistical line of a 3.26 GAA and a .906 Save Percentage (each of those being just outside the top 5 for qualified goaltenders) with a league leading 6 shutouts. Last season the Keswick, Ontario local spent between the Muskoka Shield in the GMHL and the PJCHL where he also got his taste of rookie hockey in 2021-2022.

 

Rookie – Blake Bowler, North York Renegades

 

Rookie netminder Blake Bowler was called upon 3 times in the month of November for the North York Renegades and in those 3 games, he delivered a win in every one. 3-0 on the month for the top of the South division standings he had a GAA of 2.33 in those games making an average of 21 saves per game in the win over the Flyers and 2 wins over the Predators. Currently 6-1 on the season with 2 shutouts to his name and a 4th in the entire league GAA of 2.89, the 2007 born goaltender from the Richmond Hill coyotes AAA program has been as reliable as any and the Renegades have one of their goaltenders of tomorrow, today.
