Temiscaming, Quebec- The Temiscaming Titans played their last game of the regular season last night, however, it was a special night for the Titans franchise. Last night, they retired the jersey of legendary captain Dayton Murray prior to the team's game against the Almaguin Spartans. Murray is in his final year of junior hockey, and will be aging out after playing in 5 seasons in the GMHL. His jersey number is 20.

The 5th captain in Titans history, Murray scored 57 goals and potted 98 assists for 155 points in 128 games with the team. He's considered one of the best defenceman in the GMHL.

A native of Spruce Grove, AB., Murray spent his youth hockey career with the Spruce Grove Saints before joining his brother, another Titan legend, Ryder on the Temiscaming Titans in 2013-2014 as a sixteen-year old rookie.

He rejoined the Titans for the 2014-2015 season, and helped bring home the first and only Russell Cup in Titans history, posting 3 goals and 9 assists for 12 points in the 17 games en route to the Championship.

In the season following, Dayton continued his excellent play, and while the Titans were unable to make a repeat, he enjoyed a great individual year, posting 27 goals and 27 assists for 54 points in 31 games played which earned him the honours of GMHL All-Star.

Murray left the Titans in the following season, and ended up seeing time in the OHL with the North Bay Battalion, however, he didn’t stay away for long and rejoined the team in 2017-2018.

At the beginning of this year, Murray was named the 5th captain for the Titans, an honour that was enjoyed by his brother as well. Murray has had an incredible year, scoring 20 goals and 43 assists for 63 points in 42 games played, and receiving the honours of GMHL All-Star for the second time in his career, and is now looking at capturing his second Russell Cup with the Titans.

Last night, Dayton was joined by his parents Lori and Shawn, as well as older brother Ryder, to watch his jersey be lifted to the rafters, amongst the Titans legends.

His final game was a fitting one, where at the 33-second mark in the first period, Murray scored his 20th of the season on the first shot of the game, to much eruption from the crowd. The Titans went on to win the game 6-3 over the Almaguin Spartans.

The GMHL is proud to see the Titans retiring the number of one of their legends, and we are happy to have had Dayton in our league. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors after the GMHL, however he will always be remembered in Temiscaming.

Be sure to catch Dayton and the Titans in the first round of the playoffs, where they’ll be playing West Nipissing Lynx, starting Friday, February 22, 2019 at 8 PM.
