GMHL Team Profile: North York Renegades

The GMHL will be profiling one team per month for the duration of the season to highlight a team that has combined on ice success with strong fan support, community involvement, a winning culture, and player development. The first team featured with one of the highest level of success on the ice and community combined since joining the league is the North York Renegades.
The Renegades joined the GMHL in the 2014-2015 season, joining the league and immediately establishing itself as one of the top recruiting teams in the GMHL with the support of an amazing community behind it.

Top Performers: The Renegades have rode their way to the top of the league standings with an extremely well balanced offensive attack with 5 of their players above 12 points in 7 games on the season (Fritz, Joseph Lionti, Jedidja Somersall, Christopher Rende and Nickolas Andreopoulos) and another 3 with at least 7 (Headlined by 4th year forward Dylan Labelle). On Defense the team had been led by former Markham AAA Defenseman Somersall and a group of players providing solid D performances on the nightly regular. In net the Renegades have the luxury of one of the top goaltenders in the league Nicholas Lewicky who is 4-0 with a .952 Save Percentage and a 1.50 Goals against Average. Both Marek Andreoli and Christopher Thompson have both won all their starts as well
Fan Support and Community Involvement: The Renegades have a great community of fans that support them both in season and during the off season. The Renegades are often among the teams that prioritize charity holding both Movember fundraisers and Pink in the Rink nights for Breast Cancer awareness fundraising during the season.
Arena and Facilities: Canlan Sports – York is an ice hockey arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is operated by Canlan Ice Sports Corporation. It is the main ice rink at York University's Keele Campus, as the home of the York Lions men's and women's varsity hockey teams. It is also the home of the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation. The facility opened in 1996 as the Beatrice Ice Gardens, and has one Olympic-sized and five NHL-sized ice rinks. The seating capacity for the largest rink is 1,200. The arena has also been used for National Hockey League training camps.
Notable Active Alumni:
Raffaele Maietta: Forward Raffaele Maietta spent parts of 2 seasons with the Renegades in 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 scoring 51 points in 38 games in the latter season. Following his final season of junior with North York Maietta began what has now become a 6 year professional career playing in Sweden between Division 2 and Division 3 currently with Lindefallets SK.
Christian D’Amico: D’Amico, 22, played in the GMHL for 2 seasons after playing U15 with the Vaughan Kings AAA team in the GTHL. In 78 games played, Christian scored 43 goals and produced 59 assists for 102 points. In two playoffs appearances, he played 16 games scoring 9 goals and 3 assists for 12 points. It was announced to us that Christian made the Waterloo Warriors hockey team roster where he will be pursuing his studies in the Waterloo University Arts program.
Brendan Mackenzie: Forward Brendan Mackenzie played his final year of junior hockey with the Renegades scoring 48 points in 36 games before he would begin his pro career which has been spent between Sweden in Division 3 and the FPHL where he has seen time on the roster of the Mentor Ice Breakers and most recently the brand new expansion team Motor City Rockers in Detroit.
