GMHL WEEKLY GAME REPORT
October 16–22, 2026
The 2026/27 Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League season continued with another exciting week of action from October 16 through October 22.
As the league moves deeper into October, several teams continue to establish themselves as early-season contenders. Northumberland and Brighton remain perfect in the South Division, while Wasaga continues its undefeated run in the North. The Bradford Rattlers also put together an impressive week, while Meaford faced one of the busiest stretches of any team in the league.
WEEK IN REVIEW
Northumberland Continues Its Perfect Start
The defending Russell Cup Champion Northumberland Stars continued their outstanding start to the season.
On Friday, October 16, the Stars defeated the Toronto Flyers 10–2, once again displaying the offensive firepower that has made them one of the league's toughest teams through the opening month.
Northumberland returned to action the following night against the North York Renegades and earned a 5–3 victory.
The two wins moved Northumberland to a perfect 10–0 record and 20 points, keeping the Stars on top of the South Division.
Every game now brings the same question: Who will be the first team to hand the defending champions a loss?
Brighton Vikings Keep Making History
The Brighton Vikings continue to make an impressive statement in their inaugural GMHL season.
Brighton entered the week undefeated and continued to find ways to win, keeping its perfect record intact.
The Vikings moved to 9–0 with 18 points, remaining right behind Northumberland in the South Division standings.
For a first-year organization to open its GMHL history with nine consecutive victories is an impressive accomplishment, and Brighton has quickly established itself as a team capable of competing with anyone in the league.
Wasaga River Dragons Remain Unbeaten
The Wasaga River Dragons continue to roll through the North Division.
One of the week's most impressive offensive performances came against the Meaford Knights, with Wasaga earning a convincing 9–4 victory.
The River Dragons entered that matchup riding a six-game winning streak and extended their undefeated run with another strong performance.
Wasaga continues to show that it will be a major factor in the North Division race.
Bradford Rattlers Put Together a Strong Week
The Bradford Rattlers had another productive stretch and continue to climb the North Division standings.
On October 16, Bradford travelled to face the Almaguin Spartans and came away with an 8–4 victory.
The Rattlers followed that performance with another win on Sunday, October 18, defeating the Meaford Knights 6–3.
Bradford jumped out quickly against Meaford and built a 5–1 advantage through two periods before finishing off the victory.
The Rattlers continue to establish themselves as one of the teams to watch in what is developing into a very competitive North Division.
Meaford Battles Through a Busy Schedule
Few teams had a busier stretch than the Meaford Knights.
After winning their home opener against Almaguin just before the beginning of this reporting period, the Knights travelled to Orangeville on Saturday, October 17, and came away with an entertaining 7–5 victory over the Blitz.
Meaford exploded for six goals in the second period to take control of the game.
Giordano Schwar had an outstanding night with one goal and four assists, while the Knights fired 46 shots on goal.
Less than 24 hours later, Meaford was back on the ice against the Bradford Rattlers, falling 6–3.
The Knights then travelled to Wasaga on October 20, where the undefeated River Dragons earned a 9–4 victory.
It was a demanding stretch for Meaford, but the Knights continued to battle while showing that they can generate plenty of offence.
Durham Earns a Big Shootout Victory
One of the most dramatic games of the week came Friday, October 16, when the Durham Roadrunners travelled to Orangeville.
The teams battled through regulation and overtime before Durham came away with a 4–3 shootout victory.
For Durham, the victory was an important result and showed the Roadrunners' ability to battle through a close game and find a way to earn the extra point.
North York Picks Up an Important Road Win
The North York Renegades opened the reporting period with a close battle against Richmond Hill.
North York came away with a 3–2 victory on October 16 before facing the undefeated Northumberland Stars the following night.
Although Northumberland earned a 5–3 victory in that matchup, North York showed it could compete against the defending Russell Cup Champions in a much tighter contest than their previous meeting.
STANDINGS WATCH
The battles at the top of both divisions continue to become more interesting.
In the South Division, Northumberland remains perfect at 10–0 with 20 points, while the expansion Brighton Vikings are right behind at 9–0 with 18 points.
St. George, Bradford Bulls and Orangeville remain part of a very competitive group battling for position behind the two undefeated leaders.
In the North Division, Wasaga remains undefeated and is battling with West Nipissing and the Bradford Rattlers near the top of the standings.
With several teams separated by only a few points, every divisional game is becoming increasingly important.
TEAMS TO WATCH
Northumberland Stars — The defending Russell Cup Champions continue to set the pace in the South and have yet to lose through their first 10 games.
Brighton Vikings — The expansion Vikings continue their remarkable inaugural season and remain perfect through nine games.
Wasaga River Dragons — Another undefeated team that continues to show impressive offensive ability in the North Division.
Bradford Rattlers — Two important victories during the week have the Rattlers firmly involved in the battle at the top of the North.
Meaford Knights — A very busy schedule is testing the Knights, but their seven-goal performance against Orangeville showed how dangerous their offence can be.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR NEXT WEEK
The biggest storyline heading into the next stretch of the schedule is impossible to ignore:
Northumberland vs. Brighton.
The two undefeated South Division teams are scheduled to meet Friday, October 23, in Colborne.
Northumberland enters the matchup at 10–0, while Brighton enters at 9–0.
Something has to give.
It will be an opportunity for Brighton to make perhaps its biggest statement yet in its inaugural GMHL season, while Northumberland will look to remind everyone why it is the defending Russell Cup Champion.
In the North Division, Wasaga will attempt to continue its undefeated run, while West Nipissing and Bradford continue to battle for position near the top.
As October comes to a close, the standings are tightening and every two points are becoming more valuable.
GMHL WEEKLY WRAP-UP
October 16–22 provided another strong week of GMHL hockey.
Northumberland, Brighton and Wasaga continue their undefeated starts, the Bradford Rattlers put together an impressive week, Durham earned an exciting shootout victory, and Meaford battled through one of the most demanding stretches of its early-season schedule.
