Deseronto Storm 2009 South Division Champions

Storm move on to Russell Cup Final

DESERONTO, ON – After three years of playoff contentions the Deseronto Storm are on there way to the Russell Cup Finals with a 4-3 overtime win over the Innisfil Lakers.

The Storm opened the scoring at 16:16 in the first period with a goal by Max Qwanstrom, assisted by Cody Maracle and Greg Martyn. Later on in the first the Lakers would even the score with a goal by Dustin Timm and helps Maxwell Douglas and Brian Davidson. Deseronto’s quick puck movement would prove to help them as before the end of the first the Storm would get another goal at 6:16 when Greg Martyn popped one past Matevz Grabnar.

The second period saw the Lakers strike the first and only time in the period as Maxwell Douglas evened up the score with help from Caleb Lister and Jonathan Dew.

The Third period both team shared goals as the Lakers went up 3-2 at the 14:40 mark in the third period. The go ahead goal was scored by Innisfil’s Conor Hendry and assisted by Alexi Kulikousky and Maxwell Douglas (2). As things looked as if there was going to be a game seven the Deseronto Storm crowd erupted as the Storm score the tying goal at 1:21 to send it into overtime. The tying goal was scored by Max Qwanstrom (2), assisted by Todd Munden and Andrew Bobas.

Overtime would commence after a three minute breather but it wouldn’t last long as the Deseronto Storm would capture the South Division Championship with a goal by Captain Jeff Morris assisted by Cody Maracle (2).

Stars of the game went out to first star Max Qwanstrom (2 goals, 1 assist), second star Maxwell Douglas (1 goal, 2 assists) and third star Greg Martyn (1 goal, 1 assist).

The Deseronto Storm will now go on to play the South Muskoka Shield in the 2009 Russell Cup Finals. Schedule to be posted soon.
