South Muskoka survives the Storm in double overtime
The South Muskoka Shield heads to Deseronto tonight for Games 3 and 4 of the Russell Cup championships with a two-game lead in the series after defeating the Storm 7-3 and 3-2 on home ice.
The final playoff series that started in Gravenhurst Tuesday night could end in the opposition’s rink on Saturday if the Shield can beat the Deseronto Storm in four straight games.
Evenly matched teams equally hungry for the championship cup, the Deseronto Storm showed its strength with a physical and tight-checking game, while the South Muskoka offence put on a show.
Tied 1-1 after the first period with Brian Valentine between the pipes, Shield forward Rob Childs put South Muskoka in front with a power play goal tipped over Jens Kanswell’s blocker.
Four minutes later, Derek Rodgers added the Shield’s third marker, assisted by Dan Söderberg and Travis Saltz for Rodgers’ second goal of the night after scoring the equalizer in the first.
