Almaguin Spartans Taking 2022/23 Leave of Absence

 September 29th, 2022 at 11:45AM  October 2nd, 2022 3:24AM

The Almaguin Spartans will be taking a leave of absence for the 2022-2023 GMHL season. This has been approved by the GMHL and our club has met all financial commitments to return to league play for the 2023-2024 season. David Forde, President of the Spartans, made the following statement regarding the leave: "this was an extremely difficult decision, but an unfortunate one that had to be made in the best interests of our players, sponsors, supporters, and our program. This decision was not due to issues that many junior teams must fold or take leaves for, which include lack of recruited players, lack of finances, lack of community support or mismanagement. This decision is being made due to one major problem, which is visa processing issues for players stemming from the war in Ukraine with Russia, and the lengthy delays with Canadian Immigration."

The Spartans have won a GMHL Regular Season Title, 2- North Division Titles, a Russell Cup and have advanced 56 players to college, major junior and professional opportunities during this time frame. The Spartans club recently restructured Coaching staff and moved arenas to the Sunridge, Ontario. The Spartans program will remain on ice, throught their local youth hockey school with private skills sessions, weekly team sessions and P.A. Day Camps for local junior and minor hockey players.
