GMHL West Regular Season Concludes

 May 11th, 2021 at 12:25PM  May 11th, 2021 5:26PM

It is an exciting time for the teams of the GMHL West Division. Following all COVID-19 Protocols and with strict lockdown provisions now in effect, the GMHL West Division was able to finish their regular season and starting next week-end, start their playoffs.

"I am very proud of our GMHL West Division Teams who have had to follow a very rigid set of guidelines to reach this stage." explained GMHL President, Bob Russell. "We had to establish a leadership team headed by Derek Prue and Lauren Barr. We established our own local Medical Officer of Health who supervised and monitored the weekly COVID Tests everyone has to take every week. We established a close liaison with our own GMHL Office, and worked very closely with all parties to get the exemption order from the Alberta Government which has been revised and monitored to ensure compliance with changing circumstances. Each team has their own leadership group to ensure strict compliance. I am grateful for all of their hard work. It really has been a team effort to be able to keep playing."

The teams have to follow strict guidelines on self-isolation, testing, and travel. It has been a personal sacrifice for all involved, but it has meant the continuation and completion of the hockey season. Everyone feels the conditions imposed and the weekly testing are still worthwhile as they get to play hockey, finish their season and have playoffs. Their hard work has resulted in negative testing results to date and the GMHL is optimistic that will continue for the rest of this month.

The High Prairie Red Wings enter the playoffs in first place with an 18-3 record. Following them are the Slave Lake Ice Dogs in second place with a record of 11-9. In third place with a record of 8-7-3 are the Northern Alberta Tomahawks. In fourth place are the Fox Creek Ice Kings with a 3-16-2 record.
